JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State Auditor Nicole Galloway released an audit Thursday of the Missouri Secretary of State (SOS) Jason Kander’s Office, who was found to have overpayed to the state’s General Revenue Fund.
SOS was shown to not have “adequate controls and procedures in place to record electronic payments.”
“Calculation errors led to about $120,000 deposited into the state’s General Revenue Fund instead of the Secretary of State’s Technology Trust Fund over the previous three years,” read a release from the Auditor’s Office.
State statutes dictate how fees are allocated between state funds.
Since the audit, SOS has notified the Office of Administration to request the inappropriately deposited monies be transferred to the SOS’s Technology Trust Fund. Approximately one-third of the amount has been transferred.
Overall, Kander’s office received an overall performance rating of “good” from the audit, which covers 2013-2015 fiscal years. The audit recommends the office improve procedures to prepare and maintain documentation to support employee pay increases.
